Spiritual Travel to Hopi: Sacred Guardians of the World

I want to thank you for another spectacular journey and for introducing me to another sweet and spiritual people. How can the Hopis not touch your heart?? I feel richer and fuller from the experience and realize it is still only the beginning. From the Hopis I learned it’s important to know who I am, know where I came from, to be humble and to love all. What a gift they gave me! Thank you Carla for all you contribute before, during and after our travels.

Cindy Mill
South Dakota

My gratitude goes to Carla for her work in uniting ancient cultural traditions and sharing those traditions with interested persons from the Western world. I was honored to be so warmly welcomed by our Hopi hosts. What we experienced in a few days was immense. The energy of the group and the spirit of Hopi will sustain me for a good while. This opportunity to see sacred dances and landscape, and to appreciate the spiritual focus of Hopi life has shifted my priorities and perception. The coming together of indigenous and western ways has expanded me in a manner yet to be discovered.

Words cannot describe the preciousness of what the Hopi trip meant to me. I’m still in awe thinking about all that I saw and experienced. I never thought I would be on Hopi Land during this walk. When we were at the kiva dance, I looked up to the sky nation and it appeared that the sky was being filled and filled with so many stars. The stars were gathering and looking down at us like we were looking down into the kiva. They were all so pleased and happy!!! … It was a powerful experience!!!

More seeds have been planted. Something quiet, deeply rooted, and profound is being held in prayer. As I plant my garden this year, I will be doing it with intent and prayer… So much unknown and yet to unfold from this journey. Sometimes feeling a bit wobbly; other times clear and focused… Always delighted when poems arise from the experiences… I have profound gratitude for your journey and vision, the woven container you create and the rooted wisdom you bring.

Janet Harvey
Asheville, North Carolina

It has deepened my commitment to live from my heart, stay and maintain my connection with the earth, and opened a new awareness… I continue to bathe in the visions that I hold in my heart of the sacred sites we visited… It was my first opportunity to be with people following their indigenous ways for an extended amount of time, which was a joy and honor… I am deeply grateful to you for providing this opportunity to bring us into the ancient world of indigenous people. Their ways enrich my life, bringing more meaning, and sacredness on a daily basis.

Honey Levin
Phoenix, Arizona

Every single moment was perfect. I know this is a very broad statement, but having the perspective of what, why and who came together. It was, and IS, perfect. The whole process is very inspiring and gives me more clarity of my role of service… This trip also allowed me to refine how I see myself contributing in the larger scheme of things. I’m starting to work on my new website, and the AZ trip took me further down the path regarding content — what I ‘do’. … Thank you again, Carla, for your strength and determination.

Gina Thomas
Veneta, Oregon

I really want to thank you for making the Hopi trip possible. I have been to the Hopi reservation many times, but I have never had the privilege of seeing the petroglyphs or meeting so many fascinating Hopi people. I not only have learned much more than I knew, but I have been very moved by the understandings of world issues by the Hopi leaders you introduced us to. My respect for the Hopi people and their traditions continues to grow with the new information I learned on this trip.

There is a certain quality of the energy on the mesas that gives one the experience of being on truly sacred ground. I had forgotten how powerful this experience can be until this trip. The experience was one I could never forget. Thank you again for making this possible for all of us.

Spiritual Travel in Mexico and Guatemala: Entering the Maya Mysteries

Balche ceremony image

Entering the Maya Mysteries was born for me back in the mid-1980s, although I didn’t know it then. I had a dream, in some ways quite similar to the one Frostie recounts below, but a different site. At the time I didn’t even know the Maya existed. Over the years there were sychronicities and waking visions that I couldn’t make sense of — until in January 1995 I went to Palenque for the first time. Magic happened — continuing to draw me back time and again. I’m now able to offer that entrypoint to others. See some of our travelers’ stories below.

Carla Woody
Founder, Kenosis LLC

For me the shining highlights of the trip, which had many beautiful and unique elements, were the personal ones. The beautiful and open hospitality in Sij’ja’ – to be enfolded into the community with such love and acceptance, to be allowed into personal places of profound significance, the beautiful fire ceremony and the wonderful landscape. It was like coming home. This is the finest memory of them all. The ceremony and meal at Xun’s (Calixto) home and listening to his story of the dreams that led him to develop his calling were also wonderful opportunities. To witness such integrity and humility allied to such ability is profoundly affecting. I did find the ceremony with Don Antonio (Martinez) interesting. It was a privilege to be part of something so steeped in ancient practice and so tenuously present now. Apart from these, the most potent memory is of the church in Chamula. So primal and chaotic – I really felt we had descended to the underworld to wake up the Gods of Spring.

Thank you, Carla, for your own quiet presence – holding space but imposing nothing on the process. It was a masterly facilitation.

Sue Evans

What drew me to this program was the aspect of seeing/participating in current ritual and ceremony and in that I was well satisfied. The opportunity to meet and engage with the indiginous healers and spiritual leaders and to have the priviledge of being invited into their homes, seeing personal altars, sharing food, etc. It was humbling to see the simplicity of life and the abundant richness; the everyday spiritual aspects of life – starting the day with a prayer and a cleansing of the home with incense, the prayers at mealtimes, before undertaking a journey, so many small gratitudes and blessings.

I also really valued the time spent in Sij’ja, just being in the countryside, walking on the land, feeling the rhythm of life, taking a traditional sweat/bath, and a great fire ceremony.

Ancient Travels of the Moqui, is what my journey to Chiapas, Mexico seemed to replicate. Kenosis Spirit Keepers through Ms. Carla Woody invited me on a journey back into the time when my ancestors occupied the regions of Chiapas, Mexico. To witness the indigenous Maya peoples practicing their strong beliefs and cultures was very overwhelming to say the least. The land upon which my ancestors harvested their crops twice a year felt like home to me!

Palenque, Tonina, and other sites still hold vibrations of scared energies our ancestors utilized in prayer for all life. It truly was and remains central to the Hopi (Moqui) in ceremony, spirit, and heart. I have brought this energy home to my people for our benefit as well as for the benefit of all. Thank you Ms. Carla Woody-Kenosis for giving me a surreal experience of Ancient Travels of The Moqui. I pray many others may experience this same journey as I have.

Thank you for a very powerful trip. I’m not sure what I expected… I think sometimes I’m just excited about the adventure and really don’t expect much to change… This trip was different… I was “sticky” before I left… I’m cleared somehow. Feels really good.

What a magical time in Chiapas. I am well aware of the exceptional and extraordinary nature of that journey. I do feel that something inside of me shifted and remains to unfold in unknown ways. I am well aware that our experiences were beyond the norm and I am very, very grateful that I shared this experience with you and all of our group. I am blessed and the gratitude I feel for your work and commitment to honoring those who dwell in spirit is immense.

… to travel to a wonderful place of our Ancestral Roots. And also to see how the Ruins, Temples of the Sun, Moon, Rain, Germination, Spider Woman & the Twin war gods, Wind, Living Agricultural & Ceremony, Food… is similar to the ways of Hopi. I’m thankful for the Shamans & the Healers to show a little of their healing and their Ceremonies with us. Praying for them to keep their Traditions & Practices Alive. And also the rain and beautiful green landscapes, mountains & trees that are sacred to us. Help Preserve Our Land. Kwah-Kwah!

This last January I had the pleasure to be part of Carla Woody’s “Maya Mysteries” program in Chiapas, Mexico. I have accompanied Carla for many years on different trips throughout the Andes of Peru. This was my first journey with Carla in Mexico. This trip allowed me to get a glimpse of the ancient Maya cosmology and the current richness of cultures that exist there today. We were fortunate to also be guided by Carol Karasik and Chip Morris, incredibly knowledgeable anthropologists and authors, with decades of experiences and stories that enriched our understanding of the Maya culture. Carla’s years of traveling throughout this region has brought her in contact with incredible people who really enriched our experiences. We were fortunate to participate in ceremony with many local Maya elders.

It is hard to capture all that we experienced on this trip, but I can say that it was full of rich encounters and experiences from beginning to the end of the journey. The Maya culture is not an extinct culture, but one that has ancient roots, and is also very much of alive in the Maya villages we visited. This was a journey where the past and present blended to create a rich blend of experiences in the spiritual, cultural and historical lives of the Maya people.

I found myself engaged in this journey on many levels (spiritual, mental, physical, emotional). I “danced” with aspects of my Self that I had forgotten, by beginning to re-member what I know… I laughed until I couldn’t breathe, cried and didn’t always know why, saw so much love in the eyes of the Maya children that my heart melted, and remembered with awe the amazing healing ceremonies that I experienced. I felt safe, well-supported and deeply grateful for this blessed opportunity… Step over your fear and show up. Lean into it. The rest will unfold without you orchestrating it…

Jan Brendes

I count “Entering the Maya Mysteries” program as one of the highlights of my life! I felt so blessed by Doña Panchita’s spirit, Shaman Don Xun and his family’s beautiful offering of food, blessings, and teachings to us. I find myself falling asleep and thinking of the lake in Najá, the god pot guardians and wondering how Don Antonio, Joaquin, and the others of the village are doing. Then, I remember once more Doña Flori’s beautiful ancestor-honoring fire ceremony in San Cristóbal de Las Casas. My heart certainly returns to Chiapas… hopefully, my body will, too!

Betina Lindsey
St. George, Utah

What an adventure!… This journey to Mexico and Guatemala reaffirmed the Hopi migration and some history from the South for me and the Hopis. My father talked about Palatqwapi, the Snake Serpent, the Twin Warriors and their Grandmother, and more that they brought with them when migrating from the South. These are all still very much alive today in the Hopi Way of Life.

My father always emphasized that we need to keep faith and continue the Hopi Way to keep the world evolving. I feel very humbled to have participated in this journey and to be able to honor my father and his knowledge and wisdom in this way.

I can’t remember a time I ever felt that happy. The journey truly touched my soul and heart in so many ways. I feel an immense peace surrounding me, and a heart that is full of love for this beautiful planet that I am lucky to walk upon.

The trip was all that I’d intended and more… I’ve been putting Doña Panchita’s and Flori’s words into action, and that’s only the beginning. You planned an absolutely wonderful series of events! Many thanks for your hard work.

Sandy Prins
Austin, Texas

It was such a beautiful experience! I know I feel different but can’t put my finger on it yet. I felt so awake and just wanted to cry (don’t know why) which I did and still do in my quiet times.

Estela Carrillo
San Jose, California

From the experiences of these trips, I was able to verify many of our cultural and spiritual connections to the Indigenous people in Mexico and Peru… It is very important that these experiences are shared with our people and also our friends from North America so that we can continue to strengthen our understanding of our history as pueblos of North America.

Harold Joseph, Jr.

These places we have visited are held in great awe by the Hopi. For they are in our stories of creation, which are told to us as youngsters and as we mature into adulthood. Understanding myself was the first lesson I received. Now healing has begun… We should continue the visits to these mystical and sacred places, because it is important that we encourage other Indigenous people to continue to practice their ancient ways for the good of all… Kwak-Kwa!

This experience deepens my belief and confidence in the power of positive transformations in the world… To truly understand we need to go into our hearts. That’s the lesson, if I am to pick one, that I have learned on this journey. Our minds can see some things, but we cannot see all, and we reach into our hearts to understand at a deeper level… I take pictures, I write, and I know I can’t fully capture the depth of experience here in Chiapas, Mexico. I will carry not only a deep appreciation for this experience, but also the rich lessons, insights and understandings — of myself and the world…

Bob Moore
Prescott, Arizona

I went to Chiapas on two occasions, with two very different intents and two very different outcomes, both intents came to fruition. I love this program for many reasons that are dear to my heart. This experience connects people in a deep spiritual way, a way that is unforgetable, unforeseeable, inescapable, at times unnerving, and always magical! Many thanks to Carla for creating this unique opportunity to engage with healers, teachers and writers that enriched my life!

Cindy Heath

The Maya Journey had so many effects on me that it would be impossible to talk about them all… I learned that I can be a lot more independent than I think I can… the confidence is there. I just needed to work on it a little… This was the most accomplished I’ve felt in years. I hope to keep that with me, and continue applying it to my life and realize that I can do anything I want to. I’m so thankful that I had the opportunity to go on this trip; I would go again in a heartbeat. Next stop: Peru!

How many times has someone experienced something so awesome that it will stay with them for the rest of their life, and feel the need to share it with others over and over? This happened to me recently, on a trip to Chiapas, Mexico with Carla Woody’s Kenosis group.

(When the group first gathered) I told them that I had been having a recurring dream for months. I saw a huge pyramid, which I mistook for Machu Picchu. I kept asking relatives and friends to climb it with me, but nobody would. Once I knew what I was going to do on this trip, the dream made more sense. On the final dream I saw a huge face in front of a temple or pyramid. It covered almost the entire front of this ruin. I had absolutely no idea where this face was located, but I somehow sensed I would find it.

(When) we took a trip to Piedras Negras, Guatemala… I was up front with the guides, talking as if there was no tomorrow, and feeling the beauty and energy of the jungle… As we walked I started seeing the beginning of a large group of ruins, most of which were still being excavated. I didn’t know what was going to happen next, but Alonso did. (Later I heard that) he told Carla to watch my face when we came upon one of the sites. I saw it and remember saying “wow”, but I said that each time I saw a ruin.

But when I got right in front of it, there was the face in my dream!!!! It was exactly as I had seen it, even though I had never seen a picture or heard of this site. I started crying, and the rain started coming down hard, but I didn’t care. I guess the sky was crying with joy, too.

The experience was mind boggling… spiritual and so beautiful… For my part, this only touched the tip of the many moving moments on this trip. It was important to me only because I followed my dream. Now I know what that really means. There were too many good things that happened to mention them all, one must go and experience it yourself. Follow your dreams and keep an open mind, you will be touched in a way that you didn’t think possible…

Amelia “Frostie” Torres

The (Maya) trip was very profound for me… and I have been affected on so many levels… and cannot begin to say when I will have integrated all that happened to me. I can say, that I would not have missed going for anything! In fact, it’s been one of the biggest highlight in my life…

Spiritual Travel to Peru and Bolivia: The Heart of the Andes

Q'ero image

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel with Carla to Peru in 2017. I witnessed and felt the incredible connection Carla has with the indigenous in this special land and I was also blessed to have my heart opened with participating in their ceremonies. It was an unforgettable journey…

Cindy Mill

I am a changed person. I can feel it in my body, my blood, my breath. A more centered and quiet me. There is a stillness there that is stable and present. I believe that if I ask and set my intent that it will come, the answers and the outcome…Stay in the moment, be present to the blessing of my life. [As one of our travelers said] “ Who gets to do this?”

Kathy (Katrina) Marshall

Veneta, Oregon

Hopi Elders talk about and remind generations after generations; of Hopi oral history including the migration stories of various clans after the flooding of Palatkwapi, a unknown ancient village located somewhere in the south. Exact routes, establish villages, and events have long been forgotten with time. Still, ancient ceremonies remained intact with clans responsible for carrying religious ceremonies through thousands of years of migrations to present day Hopi villages where the ceremonies are still practiced today.

The Heart of the Andes journey offered an opportunity to connect with ancestral history… Each day I visited archeological sites with our group and host. Visiting the great Titicaca Lake, to hear a local legend of a great city which was flooded thousands of years ago sitting at the bottom of the lake. The more I saw, the more I was reminded of how the structures, stone walls, the land and historical stories is similar in the the Hopi Southwest. The migration symbol is common to the southwest but seeing it in South America help support our Elders stories of Hopi migration from the south: ‘Palatkwapi.’

I signed up with the intent of walking a Sacred Pilgrimage. And yet… it was a journey that impacted deeply and the ripples didn’t really start flowing till I was on way home. A once in a lifetime journey…

Bekki Davis

The venture was very sacred for me. I was praying all throughout the trip. Visiting the shrines were most powerful as we have similar ones. This visit partially confirms the Hopi origin as the floods were mentioned, and the Serpent was included in the Hopi migration symbol at the PumaPunku. The Constellation the Hopi observe are similar to the Incas. I am very, very thankful to the person that made it possible for me to make this venture.

I am hardly able to put the amazing time into words at the moment. We are still living the experience and that says it all really. Nothing in this reality will ever be the same. My husband who came with no expectations is changed forever (his words). Thanks again for making the Journey such a beautiful experience. It is clear that it was planned with love for the country and its people and genuine commitment to ensuring that we all got everything possible from it. May your work long continue.

I continue to feel the movement of Peru, stirring in the depths of my being, slowly attaching the lessons of a blessed land to my DNA. It gently nudges me, awakening a dormant me, that perhaps was abandoned at birth and now seems to have been found. It’s like a beautiful kundalini rising day after day. It’s good to be me!

Matt Wagner

Portland, Oregon

I was blessed to participate in the wonderful experience in Peru! I still feel so connected to others on our journey — and shall always be through our filaments, experience and love. The Hopi leaders who came on this trip were vital in this connection. Carla’s work in bringing the indigenous to the western world and each other is important to each and every one of us. This connection brings harmony and growth; a deeper understanding of ourselves, each other, the Cosmos and Pachamama.

Maria Larrea

Going on the Kenosis trip to Peru put me in touch with this saying in a very deep, transformational, and unforgettable way. The profound lessons I experienced on how to “be the change” revolved around the intent I had at the beginning of the journey… A sense of integrity in who I am and what I do has blossomed in my soul, deepening my commitment to creating a better place for all beings… The splendor of Peru and the incomparable teachings, guidance, support, and friendship from the group and its facilitators have infused magic, wonder, truth, and love into the very atoms of my being. For that, I am filled with overwhelming gratitude for the truly wonderful experience of this spiritual adventure…

…The most important change that happened was the deconstruction of my socialized conditioning, limitations based on fear, and self-imposed doubts, those things that steal away crucial energy and attention… In breaking the barriers and exposing the illusions, I was truly blessed to be in good company, surrounded by compassionate, wise souls that were like my spiritual family. They helped me to remember what I already knew, gave me kind, loving support when I felt lost and scared, helped me to laugh riotously and shake loose the musty blanket of insecurity, confided their most heart-breaking feelings and thoughts while exposing their most tender vulnerabilities, and in doing so, showed me what real courage is. Without them, I surely would not have been able to process so much in such a short amount of time. The enormous meaning of such a gift is inexpressible, coming from a place that is beyond words, beyond reason, but as vital as the breath. I take with me a renewed sense of my true self, an expanded belief of what I am capable of, a hunger to live wild and free, and a stronger devotion to follow my bliss…

Rissa Steifel

… We have walked our path for over 20 years now and we can honestly say that this trip truly opened our hearts more than we thought possible… and gave us the courage and belief in ourselves to continue…

Phoebe and Paul Hoogendyk

What a gift! The chance to travel to another country at this point in my life, to be exposed to a beautiful culture and have my eyes opened to the world is an incredible gift all in itself. And to take this journey with such amazing people and do such amazing work with the heart and spirit, remains unparalleled. Who does that? Who gets to go and hang out in Peru? I am truly blessed and solid in that knowing because of this experience. Parts of myself have been opened as a result of the work that has and will continue to make my life more fulfilled, and I have the opportunity to carry that with me and share it with those close to me, and I do remember, and I will remember. An incredible gift was given to me, and I remain ever grateful to the ones who allowed me the chance of a lifetime.

Kelly Sinclair

San Diego, California

I was privileged to journey to Peru with a small group of nurse leaders from around the country. The purpose of this vacation journey was spiritual, i.e., to further develop my inner life in order to enhance my personal and professional life. Often one has to travel out of one’s comfort zone to learn, and I must admit that this was the case for me…

For 16 days we ate, slept, hiked and meditated together, albeit in the beautiful Andes mountains. The days we spent together were very ordinary, yet in the ordinariness of simple living, extraordinary truths unfolded… A new definition of meditation learned on this journey is “sit and be still and gaze upon the world and others with love”. One of my most exquisite experiences was witnessing a mountain sunset accompanied by many children (age 5 to teens) who were able to sit still and hold the silence for over 30 minutes… We had the privilege of experiencing several blessing ceremonies with the Indian healers. These humble village healers, we were reminded, might be gardeners or cooks during the day and healers by night. It was a reminder to not be so impressed by roles or position, a reminder to practice humility in the contribution of our work… (I learned) When we become too serious, we are “ill”; when we become rigid, we are “dead”, therefore, learn to be “fluido”, i.e., “go with the flow of life” rather than swimming upstream in life. May these simple messages challenge you, as they have me, and bring you peace.

Claudia Dietrich

Mandan, North Dakota

What happened for me during the trip was that many open loops came to a close. Many of them open for a couple of years. I felt like I had reached a new platform within my personal journey… Last year this time I was still absolutely ignorant about Peru. It is not even a year and I have been there twice. When I look back to that journey and what it did to me I am speechless. I am so full of joy…

Barbara Zuber

Berlin, Germany

Thank you for doing what you do… I am a different person returning from Peru because of you creating the experience and walking with me. You and your work are a gift to the world. I am so full of joy and freedom and so on purpose without fear. I have been listening to the wind and the eagles are showing up and traveling with me even here in Michigan. I have never seen them here before…

Laurie Shiparski

Rockford, Michigan

What an honor to have experienced the magical journey with all of you! I loved all the diverse parts… I feel that the service work we all participated in Peru has transformed our lives for the better as well as helping to raise the frequency of certain stuck parts of our beloved planet. My life is going so much more smoothly than before. There is less wasted energy. Some things that used to bother me no longer do so anymore. I feel blessed to be a part of such a loving, wonderful group.

Vy Malmuth

Lihue, Hawaii

We came to Peru as students and seekers — with a healthy dose of humility. Without overstating the degree to which we have been able to balance ancient wisdom and modern… The more I explain this trip to friends back here (or at least try to explain), the more I realize that this was a defining moment in my life… Like learning how to swim, all sorts of possibilities are now presenting themselves…

Doug Easterling

Winston-Salem, NC

The experiences I had in Peru were definitely life changing, To know what it feels like to be in salk’a energy is one of the greatest gifts. The cleansing of old wounds is a miracle…

Jeannie Robinson

I think of the wonderful journey that we all shared together, something that I will never forget — the special people that I was lucky enough to travel with and meet along the way, and that extraordinary mountain which I still see in my dreams…

Jo Elliott, Wellington

It is an understatement to say that the trip was transformational!! I find that there is a ‘fluidity’ in the way I experience everything since back… When I came to Peru I had a wide open future… and within 4 days after returning, a new direction in life… I do not know or understand how the Universe truly works, but dear friends, the mystery of it all is beautiful beyond measure… One of the big take-away’s for me was the deep desire to quit trying to figure things out and living more fully in the experience! Thanks again for showing up in my ‘experience’ during such a time of transition… and ‘resetting’ the ‘BEING’ button in my life.

JoEllen Koerner

Sioux Falls, South Dakota

I discovered where I came from and who I am, what I once learned and what I had forgotten. I was called a name I used to be called and then I remembered… I felt the touch of the ancestors and heard their whispering telling me how to connect with the wisdom that is all around us… I was home. I was free.

Jeanett Glatved

Denmark

Two months after returning home, I am still, and will probably for quite some time in the future, becoming conscious of what I came away with…

…For the entire time that I was in Peru, I was aware that this was the most continuously energizing yet peaceful and serene period of time I can ever remember experiencing in my entire 61 years of life. There was… an awareness of, not only the energy surrounding me, but also the conscious awareness of my own energy and the power of that energy that I can make conscious use of for a peaceful world and the well-being of all things.

I feel truly blessed to have had the opportunity to experience Peru and its wonders… I will be returning soon along with several of my waikis from Prescott.

Malik Paul Gregory

Prescott, Arizona

…surrounded by the impeccability of nature and the ancient wisdom… I could feel myself releasing my attachment to the mind’s control and opening that precious heart center… Although I had intellectually realized this insight before this trip, I felt that I had finally experienced its message at my heart’s center…

…(Since my return from Peru) I’ve felt a sense of peace and calmness that seems to prevail in spite of my day-to-day challenges. I’m heartened to know that the beautiful sense of freedom and divinity I experienced in Peru is there for me anywhere, anytime, as long as I remain conscious of its existence.
